Flying With Babies and Children - Top Tips for a Stress Free Flight

Flying With Babies and Children - Top Tips for a Stress Free Flight
By Brenda T

Flying with babies and with children can be trying to say the least. Long haul flights seem to last forever and even short flights can make a mother's stress levels soar because very often it is taking off and landing that are toughest to handle. Here are some top tips for having a fun and relaxed flight with your children. Your fellow flyers will love you for it!

If you're traveling with a baby, have a bottle or pacifier at hand for take off and landing. Sucking helps babies deal with the change in air pressure. If you're breast feeding and can can keep your baby on your lap, then breast feed! If you have concerns that someone will get upset, consider that a crying baby is far more disturbing than a breast feeding baby.
Make sure you have enough food and drink that your child likes for the entire trip. Don't depend on the airline to cater to your child's eating habits especially if you are flying a foreign airline.
Keep babies, toddlers and kids busy. Have enough age appropriate toys and entertainment to last the entire flight. It's best to put together a program of a variety of things to do. Let the kids get involved in creating a fun program, but don't leave it up to them. They won't bring enough to do, or will bring too much.
Take your toddlers for a walk when the aisles are clear. Go check out the toilets and the kitchen. See if a flight attendant can show them how they get the food ready.
If you've got a long haul overnight flight ahead of you, bring pajamas for babies and small children and stick to your usual bedtime routine. It will help them to get to sleep.
Ask for an extra blanket and make a tent over your sleeping child to keep out light and other distractions. They love it!
Most airline staff are great with kids so ask for help if you need it. They do get busy sometimes so be considerate.
Always give yourself extra time to check in and get through security. It's stressful enough without kids. If you've got time, you can make a game of it. There are plenty of things for kids to learn and discover at an airport. If it's fun for them, it will be fun for you too.

Follow these tips and you'll have a fun and chilled out flight!
